Kobernik's 6th Grade
2004-2005

Welcome to Mrs. K's 6th grade site.

As the year progresses, time seems to move faster and faster. We only have 1/4 of the year left.
Look around our site and see all our projects. We are still practicing our "Double R S" and earning our cheetah spots. Now we are working on earning PAWS for Positive Action With Style.
Math has been a challenge as we move into complicated division problems and Math in the Mind's Eye activities. And we are still working on using mental math to work with big numbers and multiply and divide decimals. Writing has been a treat with the use of handhelds in the class. Many of our stories are online. We have finished Ecology and know about our wonderful Earth's resources. Social Studies topics have included working on Ancient cultures and early colonization. We are looking forward to even more complicated Computer projects and more use of the handhelds.
Check back often to see our additions and improvements to this site and browse the rest of the Winston Dillard Site.

Haley's book report "The Talking Earth" 4-27-05
The Talking Earth is about a young Seminole girl named Billie Wind. She doesn't believe the tribe's legends about talking animals, and earth spirits. The council is angered by her non-believing, and decided to let her learn her lesson. They told Billie Wind that in order for her to do so, she must travel into the pa-hay-okee, and see the giant serpent, meet the little underground people, and hear the animals speak. These things were the beliefs of the tribe.

That is how young Billie Wind's adventure begins. Along her way she meets an otter, a panther, a land turtle, and a boy named Oats Tiger. Though, as sorry as I am, I can't tell you any more about the story itself. That would ruin the story :( If you were wondering, the author of this book is Jean Craighead George. Another thing some readers like to know is how long the book is. If you like long books then this one will keep your attention. Also if you like short books you can't miss this one. The truth is that it's whatever you want! It only has 151 pages, not that little, and not that much. I personally like long books.

I think that I'm a lot like Billie Wind, because I love animals just like her. I suppose that I'm a little like the otter, because he likes to swim. I think that the author liked the book, and wanted people to understand that you can get everything that you need from nature without hurting it, and that if you have faith you can survive.

Anyway, I hope that I encourage you to read the book "The Talking Earth". Well, I’m all done, until next time, bye.
